Ela tem o objetivo de ser a categoria mais avan ada do esporte a motor. regulamentada pela Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), com sede em Paris. Ao contr rio do que muitos acreditam, o registro oficial da categoria consta como F rmula Um, com o n meral escrito por extenso, mas também se aceita o uso do 1 e do I O campeonato mundial de F rmula 1 se originou com as corridas de Grandes Prémios disputadas na Europa, desde antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Com a guerra as corridas cessaram e s retornariam em 1950. Nesse ano foi institu do o campeonato de F rmula 1, que teria regularidade anual. Ao longo da hist ria houve enormes mudan as no desporto, tanto no que diz respeito a carros como no que toca a circuitos, regras e seguran a. Por diversas vezes ao longo de sua hist ria, regras foram alteradas com a finalidade de aumentar a seguran a e a competitividade nas pistas. Também foram feitas diversas altera es em circuitos, como melhorias nos guard rails, nas reas de escape, coloca o de chicanes, entre outras, principalmente ap s as mortes dos pilotos Ayrton Senna e Roland Ratzenberger no Grande Pr mio de San Marino, em 1994. Na temporada de 2009 ser o disputados 17 Grandes Pr mios de F rmula Um. Atualmente a F rmula Um n o disputa nenhum grande pr mio em continente africano ou norte americano, entretanto ela hoje j chegou até mesmo ao Oriente Médio. A grande novidade para esta temporada consiste no GP de Abu Dhabi: além de ser a primeira prova no pa s, a disputa ser realizada no circuito de Yas Island.
