Violators возникли из The Dismal Sports, собранной в 1978 году анархо-панк группы, в которой участвовали Шон Стилес (Чесс) и Джон Марчингтон (Матчи). Случилось это в 1980м, после того, как остальные участники группы поняли, что в Chapel-eu-le-Frith (маленький городок в Дербшире, Англия) нечего ловить и умотали в Лондон. Но Чесс (вокал) и Матчи (бас), не теряя энтузиазма, взяли с собой на борт Хелен Хилл (вокал), Марка Коли (гитара) и Энтони «Аякса» Холла (барабаны), переименовались в Violators и начали усиленно терзать инструменты.
